The East Bay Express won an award for Coverage of Protests and Racial Justice-News or Feature Team Reporting in the 2020 California Journalism Awards, the California News Publishers Association announced on Tuesday, May 18.
Considered the state’s leading journalism contest, the CJAs called “Dark Night of the Stole” – by D. Scot Miller and Steven Tavares, on the unusual activities at a May Oakland 2020 protest, which eventually led to the uncovering of national infiltration of white supremacists and “Boogaloo Boys” in the wake of George Floyd’s murder by Derek Chauvin – “Very strong narrative writing and sophisticated analysis of events that went far beyond a simple recounting of the unrest to delve into what and who was behind it.”
Design Director Kara Brown was honored for Front Page Layout and Design and Editor Daedalus Howell was also recognized.
“It’s been a challenging year on many fronts, and it’s nice that some of our writers are producing some of the state’s best journalism,” said East Bay Express CEO/Executive Editor, Dan Pulcrano. “We greatly appreciate the many readers who contributed voluntarily to keep an independent, non-paywalled site alive at a time when the pandemic decimated many traditional advertising streams.”
